info on apples

Apple trees are one of the earliest fruit trees to be cultivated several thousands year ago. Domesticated Apple trees originate from wild species in asia.

In botanical terms apple trees, Malus Domestica, belong to the rose family. Cultivated trees can grow up to 40 ft tall, they are decidious and blossom in spring.

The flowers are pollinated by bees often domestic honey bees from hives put on purpose in the plantation to assure good pollination and high yield. Apple trees can not self-pollinate but need to cross pollinate i.e. they need pollen from another tree.

After pollination fruits grow during summer and ripening in autum where apples are harvested. More than 7.000 apple cultivars are known and one single tree can yield a harvest of more than 400 Lbs in autum.
Golden delicious, Granny smith, Cox orange and fuji are welknown apple cultivars.
